Schools in Vernon, Lumby, Cherryville send students home due to power outage

Outages close 4 schools

Power outages at four Vernon School District schools have sent students home for the day.

School District 22 reports outages affecting BX Elementary in Vernon, J.W. Inglis Elementary and Charles Bloom Secondary in Lumby, and Cherryville Elementary.

Staff are contacting parents to send students home, the district says, as power has been out for the morning in the wake of a powerful wind storm that swept across the Southern Interior in the early hours.

More than 100,000 customers have been reported without power across southern B.C., according to BC Hydro. Several outages are reported in the North Okanagan, from Armstrong-Spallumcheen to Vernon, Coldstream, Lumby and Cherryville, affecting a few thousand customers.

BC Hydro is unable to confirm when power will be restored to the schools, the district says.

The outage has left the schools with no heat or ventilation.

Buses started returning children at 11 a.m.

If no one is at home, students will remain at school until regular dismissal time, the district says.
